“Doug Varone’s choreography is finely drawn and operatically rich…”
-Portland Press Herald (Maine)

The return of Doug Varone and Dancers to Wesleyan is designed to give the audience an intimate look at Doug Varone‘s work. The first half of the program, Stripped, opens with his masterpiece Rise (1993), with music by John Adams, and the dancers in rehearsal clothes under minimal lighting. Mr. Varone then comes onstage to walk through the creative process that gave birth to his most recent work, Carrugi (2012), deconstructing the dance and showing how he works with dancers to build the choreography. For the second half of the program, Dressed, the company returns in costume and performs the fully-produced Connecticut premiere of Carrugi. Inspired by the winding, narrow streets and alleyways of the Liguria region of the northwest coast of Italy, Carrugi is set to the oratorio “La Betulia Liberata” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. A Breaking Ground Dance Series event presented by the Dance Department and the Center for the Arts.

Join the Spring Fling Committee! App deadline 9/6

Dear Students,

Want to help plan Spring Fling, book artists, and have unadulterated access to the most top-secret listserv on campus? You’re interested in Spring Fling Committee (the artist formerly known as Social Committee). We are not the Concert Committee (they allocate money, we plan Spring Fling).

Spring Fling Committee remains a committee unlike any other, which happens to plan and execute one of the biggest campus events of the year and funding thereof. Its application process is open to the entire student body; its selection process based on your application, experience, merit and an interview. Those unhappy with the Spring Fling booking process would do well to take note: here’s your opportunity to get involved.

Spring Fling is an all-campus outdoor concert that happens on Foss kendricklamar2Hill when it’s sunny and in the Hockey Rink when it’s not, every May. In the past, artists like Chairlift, Kendrick Lamar, Big Boi and TV on the Radio have come to rock out with Wesleyan’s student body. Spring Fling Committee works throughout the year to put together a multiple-act show that brings diverse, current and enjoyable bands to campus in an effort to celebrate the end of the year with the entire student body.

If you would like to become a member of Spring Fling Committee in the 2013-2014 school year, please answer the questions in the attached application (either in an email or an attached word document) and send them to Elisa Cardona(ecardona@wesleyan.edu)by 5pm on Monday, September 9th. We will review the applications and contact applicants for interviews. The committee meets once a week according to member availability. Download the application here.

Note from Dean Brown

Hey 2017’ers,

I hope you have had a great orientation and are ready for the first day of classes tomorrow, Monday, September 2.  It has been great meeting so many of you already!!  You now enter two weeks of drop/add, which ends on Friday, September 13.  If you are going to add or change courses during this time, consult with your faculty advisor and try to make the changes as soon as possible so that you keep pace with the coursework.   Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this.

CHECK YOUR SCHEDULES – DROP/ADD PERIOD

During drop/add, check your schedule for accuracy—the right thumbnailCA66YGAZsection, the right departmental or program designation, and the right grading mode (letter grade of CR/U, if the course offers an option).  Make sure that you are in fact enrolled in all the classes you are attending!  You cannot change the designation or the grading mode option after the drop/add period.  After this comes the withdrawal period, when you will need to petition to make any course changes, so CHECK YOUR SCHEDULES!

WITHDRAWAL PERIOD

The withdrawal period begins on Saturday, September 14 and goes through the tenth week of classes.  During this time, besides no changes in grading mode or course designations, dropping a course will be noted with a “W” for “withdrawal” on your transcript.

CONNECTIONS!

Check out the email I sent about the Connections—a program where you are matched with a faculty or staff mentor and an upperclass student, both of whom can serve as a good touchstone for you and answer your questions about the University and life at Wes on a one-to-one basis.  It’s a great way to get connected with the Wes community!

DROP-IN HOURS/APPOINTMENTS

If you want to consult about courses or academic direction or just talk about how things are going for you as you settle into Wes, please do not hesitate to come to my drop-in hours, listed below.  I also will be sending out notes so that we get a chance to meet, so don’t be surprised if you get one!  Drop-ins are first-come, first-served and you can sign up for a meeting on the sheet outside my office door.  If you would like longer than a 10 minute or so meeting, please contact Camille Martin, my administrative assistant, at x2758 or csmartin@wesleyan.edu to schedule a time that’s good for you.  Any question is a GOOD question, so please stop by to see me.

Have a great first week of classes and check out the great programs offered during extended orientation this week!

Best, Dean Brown
